The
Gastric Bypass Surgery

Losing weight is important to most of us and for some of us desperate times call for desperate measures. In the case of severe or morbid obesity, the gastric bypass procedure may be the only choice.

The procedure consists of reducing the size of your stomach by creating a smaller pouch. They divide your stomach in two sections by stitching the top from the lower, the top being the smaller pouch and receiving all of your food. Then they connect a section of the small intestine to the pouch. This section is called the “Roux limb” and will take the ingested food past the lower stomach. Then they reconnect the “Roux limb” to the small intestine creating a “Y” shape. This connection will allow the food to mix with pancreatic fluids and bile to aid in the absorption of minerals and vitamins.

This is one kind of gastric bypass surgeries, and there are a few others. The main thing is once you decide to take this path; the doctors will give you a full health examination and a psychiatric evaluation. The main goal and the key to the weight loss success is the change of lifestyle after the surgery. If they (the doctors) determine that you probably won’t change your lifestyle and eating habits, you won’t be eligible for the surgery.

There is also a new kind of procedure called the “lap band”. They insert a small band on your stomach instead of stitches, to reduce the amount of food you can eat and increases the digestion period. It can also be adjusted to slower or quicken the digestion process. The side effects can be nausea, vomiting and gastro-oesophageal reflux.

As I mentioned earlier on this site, losing weight is relatively easy if you have the “will power” to stick with it. And I don’t think the surgeons will waste they’re time with a patient that has nothing to do with guidelines to remain healthy.

I’m a little mixed on these procedures and if any of you have received them, let me know by posting you comments so that we call all benefit from your experiences.
